How to grow Lilium brownii var. viridulum? Cultivation key points explained in one article
I. Variety characteristics and traits
Longya lily (Lilium brownii var. viridulum), also called musk lily, is a sweet lily type. The above-ground part is 80-110cm tall, leaves are 10-18cm long, flowers are white, bulbs are nearly spherical, each weighing 250-500g, white, with narrow and thick scales, tightly clasped, pure white and tender, good quality, with a special fragrance, fast growth, early maturity. Generally 667m can produce 2000kg of fresh scales.
II. Cultivation techniques
1. Land preparation and fertilization: It is advisable to choose fertile soil, well-drained sandy loam high-ridge fields or sloping land, with a 3-year crop rotation. The previous crop should preferably be melons and beans, or cereals, and avoid rotating with onions and garlic. In the planting year, autumn and winter vegetables such as spinach, lettuce or cruciferous vegetables can be intercropped. It is generally open-field cultivation, but plastic film mulching can also be used, which can advance emergence by 7-15 days and increase yield. Deep plow more than 25cm, apply 50-60kg of lime per 667 square meters, make beds 1.8-2.0m wide, with ditches 40cm deep, open planting holes or planting furrows according to plant and row spacing, apply 2500-3000kg of organic fertilizer, 50-100kg of cake fertilizer, 20-30kg of phosphate fertilizer per 667 square meters, and cover with soil on top. For plastic film planting, broadcast application is preferable, and shape the bed into a turtle-back form.
2. Sowing and seedling raising: Starting from the previous 3 years, select pest-free, undamaged bulbs as seed bulbs, peel off the scales and store them indoors in wet sand for 30 days to promote germination. After late September, select seed scales that have already rooted and produced small bulbs and sow them into the soil. When sowing, place the concave side of the scale facing up, sow one scale every 3-4cm, plant obliquely into the soil at a depth of 3-4cm, cover with soil and then cover with film or straw: dig them out in late August of the second year and sow again, with plant and row spacing of 15-20cm; in early August of the third year, after the leaves wither, dig them up, use the large ones as seed bulbs, and continue cultivating the small ones for another year.
The suitable sowing period is August to September. Select robust seed bulbs with white scales, tightly clasped, and a single bulb weight of 50-60g. Row spacing 30-33cm, plant spacing 15-20cm, planting furrow depth 10-12cm, apply base fertilizer in layers. First place a layer of fertilizer at the bottom of the furrow, cover with a layer of soil, cover with soil 3cm thick after sowing, then cover with straw to keep warm and moist. Sow or plant vegetables between the rows as intercrops. For plastic film cultivation, level and finely prepare the bed, and cover the film close to the ground.
3. Field management: In winter, combine with the fertilization and management of intercropped crops for cultivating, weeding, and topdressing. Before the Beginning of Spring, apply 1000kg of decomposed human manure and urine per 667 square meters. When thinning seedlings, remove the covering straw. When the seedlings are 33cm tall, apply 150kg of decomposed cake fertilizer and 10kg of phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer per 667 square meters, deeply apply between the rows or cultivate beside the roots, and earth up around the roots. For those covered with plastic film, promptly break the film to let seedlings emerge when they sprout, and when the 5cm topsoil temperature reaches 25°C, promptly remove the plastic film. Clean the ditches and drain water to prevent waterlogging. In late June, choose sunny days and pour 500kg of human and livestock manure water plus an appropriate amount of urea per 667 square meters. In late July, when the weather is dry, carry out foliar topdressing 1-2 times, and stop topdressing 40-50 days before harvest.
After emergence in early March, keep only one strong seedling per plant, and remove the rest. From late May to early June, when the plant has grown about 60 leaves, pinch off the growing tip. From late June to early July, flower buds appear, and the flower buds should be removed promptly.
