How to prevent and treat Epistylis infestations in soft-shelled turtles
Cause: Caused by parasitism of Epistylis spp. (bell animalcules) of the genus Epistylis.
Symptoms: On the body surface of the soft-shelled turtle, clusters of flocculent material can be seen with the naked eye on the limbs, back and neck, and even the head, yellowish or earthy yellow in color; in water it is not as soft and flowing as water mold, but somewhat stiff and wing-like. When the condition is severe, the limbs turn brown or copper-green. A small number of parasites has no effect on the soft-shelled turtle, but heavy parasitism affects its movement, feeding, and even breathing, causing the turtle to waste away and die.
Prevention and treatment:
1) When the disease occurs, splash 0.5 ppm "Fish-use Bomie" and 5-10 ppm potassium permanganate separately, one after the other, for disinfection;
2) Splash 3 ppm "Duchong No. 2" over the entire pond;
3) At ordinary times, take care that the water is not too fertile and keep the water quality fresh.
