Species introduction: The King Ratsnake is large in size, cold-tolerant, highly adaptable, fast-growing, with a short breeding cycle, and easy to keep and incubate, among many other advantages. Many snake farms or snake keepers, especially in the northern provinces and regions, mostly keep it as the non-venomous snake of choice. The King Ratsnake is also known as the Cauliflower Snake, Great King Snake, Snake King, Smelly Yellow Jaw, and so on. Among non-venomous snakes (excluding pythons), it is the fastest-growing and larger-bodied species. It inhabits mountainous areas, plains and hilly terrain, and is active along riversides, pond edges, reservoir areas and other places near water.

The King Ratsnake moves nimbly, has a fierce temperament, crawls quickly and can climb trees. It is a generalist feeder, preying on frogs, birds, rodents and various bird eggs. When food is scarce, it will even swallow its own young or others of its own kind. Therefore, special attention must be paid in captive breeding: its food must be guaranteed to be sufficient and varied, which is also the main reason why King Ratsnakes kept in captivity must be housed separately and cannot be co-housed with other non-venomous snakes. The King Ratsnake's anal glands can give off a peculiar foul odour, hence the name Smelly Yellow Jaw. After handling the snake's body, you must wipe your hands with ginger slices or wash them with strongly scented soap to remove the smell.
