How to prevent fish from oxygen deprivation in winter? These methods you must master
In winter, although the feeding activity of fish in ponds decreases, they still need a certain amount of dissolved oxygen to maintain slow breathing. The dissolved oxygen in a pond mainly comes from the photosynthesis of phytoplankton and from oxygen in the air dissolving directly into the water. However, in the cold winter, once the pond surface freezes over, oxygen in the air can no longer dissolve into the fish pond. When heavy snow covers the ice surface, sunlight cannot shine directly into the pond water, so the green plants in the water cannot carry out photosynthesis to produce oxygen. Moreover, in winter most fish gather at the bottom of the water. If the water quality is poor, the fish are weak, or management is poor, fish are prone to oxygen deprivation and suffocation. The methods for preventing fish from oxygen deprivation in winter are described below:
Clear away the snow. During the ice-covered period in winter, if snowy weather occurs, promptly clear away the snow on the surface of the fish pond so that sunlight can reach the pond water, ensuring that the green plants in the pond water carry out photosynthesis normally and release oxygen in time.
Break the ice to aerate. After the water surface freezes over, break open the ice surface every morning and evening. Generally, for each mu of fish pond, ice holes of 5-6 sq m should be broken open. At the same time, remove the broken ice blocks so that they do not quickly freeze again.
Add and change new water. During the overwintering period, besides maintaining the highest water level to increase oxygen and keep warm, new water should also be injected regularly to improve the living environment of the fish and increase dissolved oxygen, generally once every 20 days. If the pond water quality is poor and shows signs of aging, the old water and harmful substances in the pond should be discharged in time. Each water change should be 1/3 of the original pond water, and then new water should be injected in time.
Apply fertilizer appropriately. When the water quality in the fish pond is clear and lean, a certain amount of inorganic fertilizer can be applied at noon on a sunny day. This can not only promote the growth of phytoplankton in the water and keep it warm, but also increase dissolved oxygen in the water through photosynthesis. The fertilizer should be applied as a mixture containing nitrogen and phosphorus components.
Stir the pond regularly. The purpose is to loosen the bottom mud, mix the upper and lower water bodies, promote the rapid decomposition of harmful substances at the bottom of the pond, and keep the fish with a certain resting place during the overwintering period so that oxygen deprivation is not caused. The method is to use a bamboo pole to stir part of the pond bottom at noon on a sunny day, and after a period of time stir another part.
Sprinkle chemicals. Regularly add an appropriate amount of quicklime, bleaching powder and other chemical agents to the pond to increase the oxygen in the fish pond and improve water quality.
