What is swine skin fungal disease?

It mainly occurs in piglets in nursery pens, and newly weaned piglets are especially susceptible; a few nursing piglets in farrowing pens also develop the disease. At first, 1-2 pigs in the same pen are affected, then it gradually spreads through contagion, and in severe cases all pigs in the same pen are affected. The incidence rate is as high as 50%-60%. [Incidence]

[Clinical symptoms]

At the beginning of the disease, the affected skin becomes flushed, and after 2-3 days the color gradually turns purplish red, accompanied by exudative inflammation. After another 2-3 days, rust-colored or brown patchy lesions gradually appear on the pig's skin, and finally spread over the whole body. At this point, the sick pigs have reduced appetite, are listless, have rough coats, fear cold, and are drowsy. Sometimes they huddle together, rub against walls due to itching, and a few sick pigs have diarrhea; piglet growth and development are stunted, and severely affected pigs become emaciated and die.

[Laboratory diagnosis]

Scrape the scabs from the lesions or hairs with exudate attached, place them on a glass slide, add a drop of normal saline or methylene blue staining solution, cover with a cover slip, and let stand. After the specimen becomes transparent and softened, observe under a microscope, and fungal hyphae and round spores can be seen. Based on the microscopic examination results of the specimen, it can be diagnosed as swine skin fungal disease.

[Treatment]

Two medicinal solutions prepared with Xuduwei, trichlorfon, and sulfur were used alternately, and only then was the disease controlled. This method not only takes effect quickly but also has high efficacy, with recovery in 2-3 days and no recurrence. The specific procedure is as follows:

① Preparation of medicinal solutions

The first medicinal solution: 0.2% Xuduwei; the second medicinal solution: 2% trichlorfon + 1% sulfur suspension.

② Spraying method

The two medicinal solutions are sprayed once each in the morning and afternoon every day.

③ Spraying requirements

Before spraying, the pens and the pigs' body surfaces must be rinsed clean. All pigs and pen floors, partitions, and walls (places piglets come into contact with) must be thoroughly sprayed wet. The spraying time is best chosen when the temperature is relatively high that day. Note that if piglet poisoning occurs during spraying, use atropine for detoxification.
