For lilies to achieve high yields, doing the three changes well is key
1. Change from using inferior seed bulbs to high-quality seed bulbs. Choose excellent varieties such as Longya lily as seed. Lilies need to be purchased from other regions as seed, which is an important measure for lily rejuvenation. Choosing seed bulbs with little or no virus is the key to high-yield lily cultivation. At the same time, pay attention to choosing thick, plump, and large seed bulbs. Use bulbs propagated from scales or directly use the daughter bulbs from the mother bulb as seed.
2. Change from sowing too early to sowing at the right time. Sowing too early makes it easy to encounter drought, often causing seed rot, and the high temperatures in early August are not conducive to breaking the dormancy period of lily seed bulbs. After sowing, roots often do not grow, and it is prone to browning and seed rot. Lilies are best sown from late August to early September. Seed bulbs dug up or purchased too early can be stored indoors in a cool place using the sand-layer stratification method to prevent sowing too early. If drought occurs after sowing, rice straw or other crop straw can be used as mulch while the soil is moist, which can lower the temperature by 2°C to 3°C, reduce soil moisture evaporation, and also provide insulation in winter. If the soil is dry after sowing, use furrow irrigation to keep the soil moist.
3. Change from wide-bed cultivation to narrow-bed cultivation. In addition to being susceptible to viral diseases, lilies also suffer severely from leaf blight, damping-off, Phytophthora blight, root rot, and other diseases. The occurrence of these diseases is closely related to humidity. Practice has shown that changing from wide-bed cultivation to narrow-bed cultivation and changing continuous cropping to crop rotation are key measures for controlling fungal diseases. Make beds about 1.5 m wide, and open the bed furrows, surrounding furrows, and main furrows well. The bed furrow should be 25 cm wide and more than 20 cm deep; the surrounding furrow should be 30 cm wide and more than 25 cm deep; the main furrow should be 40 cm wide and more than 30 cm deep, so that there is no standing water in the furrows after rain.
