Shar Pei Care Guide: Feeding Methods and Precautions
The Shar Pei's body is larger than that of ordinary small dogs, and because it is quite active, its diet should contain more meat, no less than about 500 grams per day, plus an equal amount of cooked dry vegetarian food. The meat should first be cooked and chopped, add a small amount of water, mix it with the dry vegetarian food and then feed. The food must be fresh and clean, and the dishes should be washed frequently and disinfected regularly. Feed it at fixed times and fixed places every day, and limit it to finishing within 15-25 minutes; if it goes over time, take the dishes away immediately so that it develops good eating habits. Every morning and afternoon, replace its fresh drinking water once.
The Shar Pei was originally a hunting and fighting dog, and it usually loves to be active, so it needs enough time every day for walking, running and other activities. But note that it should not exercise excessively, because this breed has a short nasal passage and is prone to oxygen deficiency during strenuous exercise.
What makes this dog different from others is that its skin has many folds, which easily accumulate dust and other dirt, so special attention must be paid to its cleanliness and hygiene; otherwise, it is prone to mange and other skin diseases. In spring and autumn, bathe it once every 7-10 days; in the hot summer days, bathe it once every other day. During the humid plum rain season, it is best to move it to a clean and dry environment for keeping. After each bath, immediately use a towel to dry its skin. In summer, wipe its body with a wet towel every day. Every 1-3 weeks, trim its toenails.
In addition, about once a week, clean its earwax and dental plaque once, and wash its eyes with dilute boric acid water to prevent keratitis.
From puppyhood, train it to develop hygienic habits, defecating and urinating at designated places.
There is one more point to note: the Shar Pei has relatively poor immune function and is prone to entropion and rickets, so special care should be taken in daily life to prevent these diseases.
