Detailed Explanation of Lily Scale Propagation Methods and Operation Steps

There are four lily propagation methods: scales, bulbs, bulbils, and seeds. Propagation by seeds and bulbils flowers late and is prone to variation. Bulb seedling raising flowers early, but the propagation coefficient is low, the amount of planting material used is large, and the cost is high. Therefore, for large-scale seedling raising, scale propagation is mostly used. 1. Seed selection.

For lily scale propagation, select excellent varieties, choose fully mature, pest- and disease-free bulbs with plump scales, and peel off the thick, intact outer scales as seed material.

2. Seedbed preparation. For lily scale seedling raising, the seedbed requires high, dry land with a low groundwater table and exposure to the sun, with fertile, loose, well-aerated, acidic soil. River sand, leaf mold, peat soil, etc. can be mixed to prepare the growing medium, and raised beds can be made and leveled for sowing.

3. Sowing time. For lily scale seedling raising, the sowing time is divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. Spring sowing is carried out in February to March, after the temperature rises, and roots and sprouts can form 2 to 4 months after sowing. Autumn sowing is carried out in August to September after harvesting the bulbs, and sprouting can occur around the Beginning of Spring, but autumn sowing requires covering to prevent freezing.

4. Sowing method. Insert the scale seed pieces vertically into the seedbed soil with the base facing downward and the tip facing upward, with the insertion depth such that the tip is exposed above the soil surface. The plant and row spacing is 8 to 10 cm x 15 to 20 cm. After lily scales are inserted, they can take root and sprout at the base and differentiate to grow small bulbs.

5. Sowing management. After sowing the scales, water thoroughly once in time, then cover with grass to keep warm and moist, weed in time, control pests and diseases, drain water to prevent waterlogging, and water to prevent drought, so as to promote rooting and sprouting. Generally, keep the seedbed moist. If the seedbed soil is too wet and waterlogged, with poor aeration, it will affect rooting and sprouting, small bulbs will be difficult to form, and in severe cases the scales will rot. If the seedbed soil is too dry, the scales will dry up, making rooting and sprouting difficult and affecting full stand establishment. After rooting and emergence, in combination with drought-resistant watering, apply a soaked liquid of decomposed cake fertilizer, 2 to 3 times a year. Prevent the application of alkaline fertilizer to ensure full and strong seedlings. After 2 to 3 years of seedbed cultivation, the bulbs can be dug out and planted, and they will then flower.
