II. Key points of diagnosis

Muscle and joint rheumatism often occurs. It often comes on suddenly, with pain in the affected muscles or joints, lameness when walking, an arched back and short steps, and the lameness may lessen after moving for a while. Sick pigs prefer to lie down and are unwilling to move. Body temperature 38-39.5°C, respiration and pulse slightly increased, appetite reduced.

III. Prevention and treatment

1. Treatment: ① Use antirheumatic drugs, such as compound sodium salicylate injection 10-20 ml, intravenous injection. Aspirin 3-5 g can also be given orally, twice a day, for 7 consecutive days.

② 2.5% cortisone acetate injection 5-10 ml, intramuscular injection, or hydrocortisone acetate injection 2-4 ml, intra-articular injection.

③ Indomethacin, 25 mg per tablet, given at 2 mg per kg body weight, twice a day, for 3 consecutive days.

④ Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine for rheumatism of the hindquarters of pigs often uses acupuncture at Baihui point first, then at Guiwei point. The Baihui point is in the depression between the lumbar vertebrae and the sacral vertebrae, and a small round needle or small wide needle is inserted vertically 1.7-2.3 cm. The Guiwei point is 3.3-5.0 cm on both sides of the Baihui point.

2. Prevention: mainly to keep pigs from being attacked by wind, cold, dampness, and so on.
