How to raise a small turtle so it lives a long life? Practical care methods to share
Introduction: Many people want to keep turtles, because they all think turtles are fun, have strong vitality, are quiet, and need only a small space. But few manage to keep them alive and well; they buy them and raise them according to the methods the pet sellers tell them, and as a result the turtles die before long. So how do you raise a long-lived little turtle?
1. How to choose one
A healthy turtle has a hard, complete, unbroken shell, a thick body, and a bright light-green shell; its eyes are bright and wide open, its nostrils are clean and clear, and its head rear and limbs move freely. It will compete for food, and some will climb onto other turtles' shells to rest. In short, choose a lively, energetic turtle.
2. Construction of the @#@238@#@ tank
All turtles like to stay in the water or eat there, and they also like to rest or bask on land. Turtles do not have gills and breathe with their lungs, so they cannot stay in the water for long. Therefore, after staying in the water for a while, they must float up and expose their nostrils above the surface to breathe and exchange air. So no matter how you design the turtle tank, in principle it must have both water and land, and it is best if water and land each take up half. A ramp must be set between the water and land as a path for the turtle to climb onto land. The slope should be about 20 degrees so that turtles can go up and down easily.
3. Feeding and food for turtles
One, red-eared sliders have the habit of basking in the sun but cannot be exposed for too long. An outdoor turtle tank cannot be placed in a spot with long periods of direct sunlight, and there must be shading. If keeping the turtle indoors, you can install a UV lamp 30 cm from the tank and shine it for 15 to 20 minutes each day. Be careful that the turtle does not escape from the tank; it is best to add a mesh cover. In winter, when the water temperature drops, let it hibernate. In summer, if possible, you can take the turtle out to bask in the sun during the day and bring it back in at night.
Two, do not keep them too densely; they should be graded by size, because turtles also prey on the weak. If keeping a large number of turtles, they should be separated into compartments, usually 30 to 40 in one compartment, which makes management easier and can promote growth.
Three, turtles are omnivorous animals. Wild turtles in nature mostly feed mainly on meat. When keeping them, feed them small fish, small shrimp, pig liver, bloodworms, cockroaches, and so on. The food should be placed in the water, but do not put pebbles in the water, to avoid the feed rotting in the gaps between the stones and affecting water quality.
Four, keep the water clean and change it often. In addition, clean the bottom sand frequently. Avoid the breeding of bacteria and pests.
4. Treatment for eye disease in red-eared sliders
Eye disease in red-eared sliders is called white eye disease, an infection caused by water pollution. Take the turtle out of the water and place it in a dark place so that the membranous material in its eyes can flow out, and you can feed it some animal liver.
Apply chloramphenicol or other anti-inflammatory eye drops to the eyes, once or twice a day, or feed penicillin at 45,000 units per kilogram of turtle body weight once or twice; or use a cotton swab or the tip of a new calligraphy brush dipped in 1% nitrofurazone or 1% rivanol aqueous solution and apply it to the eyes twice a day, then put the turtle back in clean water. Basically it can be cured in six days.
Pick a healthy baby turtle
1. Timing: it is best in early summer, because by then the turtle has finished hibernation, and as the temperature rises its activity also increases, which makes it easier to choose and easier to tell sick turtles apart.
2. Appearance: the shell should not be brittle, and the lines should be clear. If there are signs of shedding, it shows that this turtle is growing very well.
3. Sex: using color to distinguish is not accurate. You can turn the turtle over and look at the tail and anal area to tell. There is not much difference between keeping a female or a male, except that male turtles can grow larger, and female turtles will lay eggs.
4. Feeding: choose one with a strong appetite.
5. Breed: there are many breeds of turtles, so be careful to choose one that suits you. Remember, remember.
Turtles are very easy pets to keep. Pay attention to the points above and you will be able to choose a good turtle. Give it a try.
For young turtles, feed once a day, every day. After the turtle grows up, you can feed it once every two or three days. The amount of turtle food each time is generally 1-1.5 times the size of its head.
When feeding turtles, pay attention to the balance of various nutrients. When stinkpot turtles, stone turtles, and the like are in their juvenile stage, they must be fed small fish, @#@254@#@, and other animal feed regularly no matter what.
How to care for a turtle every day
First, you must feed the turtle. Young turtles must be fed every day, and adult turtles can be fed once every two or three days.
Second, place the turtle cage in a place convenient for sunlight, and let the turtle sunbathe every day.
Third, check the turtle's health every day, pay attention to observing changes in the turtle's body, and see whether the shell has become soft, whether the eyes are wide open, whether the feet and neck are injured, and so on, so that diseases can be found early and treated.
How to treat blindness in a small turtle after hibernation
After a small turtle hibernates, eye problems are very common. The reason it cannot see may be that there is a white membrane in its eyes. If so, you can apply chloramphenicol eye drops to the turtle's eyes, two to three times a day.
