Control Methods for the Pryeria sinica Moth on the Ornamental Landscape Tree Euonymus japonicus
Distribution and Damage The Pryeria sinica Moore, also known as the Euonymus japonicus long-haired moth and the Euonymus japonicus moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Zygaenidae. It is distributed in Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Lianyungang and Hefei, among other places. It damages Euonymus japonicus, silver-edged Euonymus japonicus, golden-heart Euonymus japonicus, Euonymus grandiflorus, Euonymus fortunei and Euonymus bungeanus, among others. The larvae feed on the host leaves, and when the infestation is severe they eat all the leaves, affecting the normal growth of the plants.
Morphological characteristics The adult is flat and round, with a black body dorsum, yellow long hairs on the thoracic dorsum and the sides of the abdomen, and a yellow abdomen. The forewings are light grayish black, slightly transparent, with the basal 1/3 light yellow. The hindwings are half the size of the forewings and slightly lighter in color. The eggs are oval. When mature, the larva is about 15 mm long, with a yellow-green abdomen, and the pronotum has a ∧-shaped black marking. There are 7 longitudinal bands on the body dorsum, and the body surface has hair tubercles and short hairs. The pupa is yellowish brown, with 7 indistinct longitudinal lines on the surface and 2 anal spines.
Life habits One generation occurs per year in the East China region. The eggs hatch from late March to early April of the following year. The larvae have the habit of congregating to cause damage. The larvae mature from late April to early May, spin cocoons in shallow soil and pupate, and overwinter as pupae. In early November the adults emerge, mate and lay eggs; the eggs are laid on branch tips, and the species overwinters as eggs.
Integrated control
(1) Strengthen maintenance and management, such as pruning off branches bearing eggs.
(2) Trapping and killing adults Use black light lamps to trap and kill adults.
(3) Chemical control During the larval damage period, spray a 1500-fold dilution of Mimic for control.
