Black locust is easy to establish when planted in autumn, and autumn is exactly the right season for planting

In the past dozen years or so, spring drought has been severe in Lincheng County, with temperatures rising quickly and soil temperatures rising slowly. Especially after newly planted black locust seedlings are watered, the soil temperature remains low for a long time, causing the aboveground parts to sprout and grow while the root system recovers slowly, which reduces the survival rate of black locust. In autumn, by contrast, temperatures gradually drop, transpiration is lower, soil moisture content is relatively stable, and black locust seedlings have accumulated relatively rich nutrients. Tree roots have no natural dormant period, and when the soil temperature is still high, the roots of black locust planted in autumn can still resume growth. Tree roots have no natural dormant period, and when the soil temperature is still high, the roots of black locust planted in autumn can still resume growth. As long as the winter frozen soil layer is not thick, the lower roots still grow to some extent, and by the following spring they sprout early, grow robustly, and the survival rate can reach more than 95%.

Planting can be done from leaf fall until the soil freezes, but planting as soon as the leaves fall is best.

For tree specifications, truncation planting is generally used, and retaining 30 cm of the seedling trunk is sufficient.

Planting technique: plant 3-5 cm deeper than in spring, and firm the soil by treading it down. Immediately after planting, water thoroughly; after watering, mound soil over the plant for winter, and burying it completely is best. In the following spring, if conditions permit, water once more; after the water infiltrates, cover with 5-10 cm of soil. If conditions do not permit, pull the soil mound open slightly to expose 10 cm of the seedling trunk.
