What are the excellent varieties of tetraploid black locust?
Tetraploid black locust was bred by the Forest Tree Breeding Research Institute of the Korea Forest Service and introduced to China in 1997. There are two types, the forage type and the timber type, with five excellent clones in total. Through regional cultivation trials by experts from our university, two excellent clones suitable for the arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China were selected for two purposes: establishing high-quality forage forests and fast-growing, high-yield timber forests. While retaining the original advantages of black locust as a pioneer afforestation species, such as drought tolerance, tolerance to barren soil and salt-alkali tolerance, these excellent clones also have the following outstanding characteristics:
(1) High biomass and rich nutrition; it can be used to feed herbivorous animals such as @#@253@#@, sheep and rabbits;
(2) Fast growth and full, straight trunk form; it can be used as pit wood, mine props and timber for other industrial and civil construction.
In the ecological environment construction of Northwest China, tetraploid black locust will serve as a replacement variety for common black locust and can be widely used to establish high-quality forage forests, fast-growing and high-yield timber forests, fuelwood forests and protective forests. In afforestation projects, its market prospects are very broad. Developing the breeding industry with high-quality forage forests can generate benefits of 1000-1500 yuan/mu•year; as fast-growing and high-yield timber forests, it can generate benefits of 800-1000 yuan/mu•year.
