What kind of tree species is the tetraploid large-leaf black locust?
The tetraploid large-leaf black locust is a superior variety selected through years of dedicated research and experimental comparison from among several excellent polyploid black locust clones introduced from abroad. The tetraploid large-leaf black locust is an artificially induced tetraploid plant, characterized by fast growth, large leaves and high biomass. Its leaf width is more than 2 times that of the common black locust, and its compound leaf dry weight, single leaf dry weight and total leaf dry weight are 1.5 times or more those of the common black locust respectively. Compared with the common black locust, the tetraploid large-leaf black locust has a denser crown, thicker branches and a stronger photosynthetic capacity. The tetraploid large-leaf black locust has very high crude protein and crude fat contents, which are 118% and 126% those of the common black locust respectively, making it very suitable for animal feed. Moreover, the tetraploid large-leaf black locust is extremely tolerant of cutting and coppicing, and with certain management techniques it can be repeatedly harvested and utilized. The tetraploid large-leaf black locust is tolerant of poor soil, and its root system can fix nitrogen, so it can serve as a pioneer tree species for greening barren hills and slopes, a tree species for soil and water conservation in river basins, and an excellent tree species for greening around villages, houses, roads and water. After this variety was introduced into our country, through multi-site experimental observation in different regions, all indicators have reached or exceeded the expected levels. At present, experts organized by the Chinese Academy of Forestry have carried out repeated and continuous research at multiple experimental bases in North China and have developed a set of scientific cultivation and propagation methods suitable for large-scale planting. At the same time, through cutting, grafting and tissue culture, a large number of high-quality seedlings have been rapidly propagated, and high-quality pure seedlings, as well as related propagation, cultivation and management techniques, can be provided to the public.
