Detailed Introduction to New Tetraploid Black Locust Varieties
The tetraploid black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) originated in South Korea and belongs to a new polyploid variety of black locust, introduced to China in recent years. Five lines have been introduced and cultivated so far, divided into two types: fast-growing timber type and forage type. Analysis of experimental results shows that, compared with common black locust clones, the tetraploid black locust has the following main characteristics: (1) The fast-growing timber type is similar to common black locust clones, but its fast growth is more pronounced. One-year-old grafted seedlings can reach a height of 3 m with a ground diameter of 3.5 cm; 3-year-old trees reach 5 m-7 m in height with a diameter at breast height of 6 cm-9 cm. An 18-year-old tree reaches 19 m in height with a diameter at breast height of 24.5 cm and a single-tree volume of 0.283 cubic meters. (2) The forage type has thornless branches and a shrubby form with no obvious main trunk, and its leaves are more than 2 times those of common black locust. The leaves are dark green and thick-fleshed. The dry weight of compound leaves and the total dry weight per plant are both more than 1.5 times those of common black locust, and the leaves are rich in various vitamins and minerals. Compared with Hungarian black locust clones, they contain 118% crude protein, 126% crude fat and 180% ash. In addition, they also contain calcium, phosphorus and other trace elements needed by livestock. The leaves are very suitable for use as animal feed.
The tetraploid black locust has stronger adaptability than common black locust, tolerating drought and poor soil, and showing strong resistance to smoke, dust and saline-alkali conditions; it forms forests quickly, making it a good tree species for soil and water conservation, windbreak and sand fixation, and returning farmland to forest. It has a high biomass per unit area, and its leaves are nutrient-rich, making it an excellent feed for animal husbandry.
