How to prevent canine parvovirus in dogs? Keep your beloved dog away from the threat of the virus
Friends with dogs at home, have you heard of parvovirus? This disease, which is relatively common in spring and winter, has recently caused a great deal of suffering for many dogs. Regarding the specific details of this disease, the reporter consulted Dr. Jia at the Animal Hospital of the Shijiazhuang Municipal Animal Husbandry Bureau, hoping it will be of help to you.
Symptoms fall into three types
For dogs, parvovirus is a terrible infectious disease with a very high mortality rate. Dogs of all ages can be infected, and young puppies are even more susceptible to this disease.
After a dog is infected with parvovirus, there is an incubation period of about 7 days. Its symptoms fall into 3 types: the gastroenteritis type, in which the sick dog will vomit and have diarrhea, and in severe cases pass bloody stools; the myocarditis type, which is similar to heart disease in humans, and the affected dog often dies before there is time for treatment; and the mixed gastroenteritis and myocarditis type, which is the most severe.
Causes of the disease
Parvovirus is an infectious disease, and generally speaking there are two routes of transmission: direct infection and indirect infection.
If a healthy dog sniffs the urine or feces of a dog with parvovirus, or comes into close contact with an infected dog, or if strong winds blow the feces and urine of infected dogs around and spread them, direct infection can occur. The second is indirect infection, which happens when the owner comes into contact with a sick dog and then touches a healthy dog without disinfecting.
Treatment and prevention
Parvovirus comes on suddenly and is severe, catching many owners off guard. In fact, as long as a careful owner notices signs that the dog is ill and takes it to the vet without delaying treatment, parvovirus can still be cured.
Although treatment is important, early prevention is even more important. First, when owners take their dogs outdoors, they should try not to go to places with many dogs, such as parks where dogs are often walked, pet hospitals, pet markets, and so on. If they do go, they must disinfect with disinfectant or soap.
Second, do not let your own dog sniff the urine or feces of other dogs, and try to avoid letting your own dog come into contact with unfamiliar dogs.
The most effective preventive measure is to vaccinate your dog early, and dogs with weaker constitutions in particular should be vaccinated, as this will boost their immunity and increase the success rate of treatment.
