How to care for a cow with a fever? These four measures you need to master
Drink more water After a sick cow develops a fever, its body consumes a lot of nutrients, its mouth is dry, and its appetite decreases, leading to anorexia. Therefore, the water supply should be met, otherwise the condition will worsen. It should drink more water to replenish body fluids and promote the excretion of intestinal toxins; adding an appropriate amount of sugar and salt to the drinking water is even better.
Rest more The cowshed should be kept clean, hygienic and quiet, and the sick cow should be allowed to rest more to reduce the sick cow's muscle activity, thereby lowering physical consumption and heat production. Do not disturb the sick cow while it is sleeping; better deep sleep can significantly enhance the cow's immunity and improve resistance.
Apply more cold compresses When the sick cow's body temperature is too high, in addition to medication, ice water or cold water can be used to apply cold compresses to the head; the effect is even better if combined with brushing the cow's body. The cold water should be changed about every 5 minutes to protect the normal function of the sick cow's brain cells and the thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus, and to prevent loss of the ability to regulate body temperature. However, this method is contraindicated for sick cows with a cold stomach or shivering.
Feed more feed After a sick cow's feed intake drops due to a high fever, feed more good feed that is palatable, easy to digest, nutritious and slightly salty, and feed more green fodder to meet the sick animal's nutritional needs and enhance disease resistance. When necessary, feed medication to regulate the stomach and intestines to enhance appetite. Once the sick cow's feed intake increases somewhat, it indicates that the condition has greatly improved.
