Method of feeding pigs a diet containing fish products

Australian scientists have found a way to reduce the fat content of pork: feeding pigs a diet containing fish products.

They claim that pork from pigs fed a diet containing fish products is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and this pork can help prevent heart disease. These acids can break down triglycerides and lower the fat content in the blood.

Alison Coates, a researcher in southern Australia, said that eating this pork is very beneficial for people.

This research was conducted jointly by Barlett and the Australian Pork Council.

The test subjects were given 200 g of omega-3-rich pork per week for two consecutive weeks. The result was a reduction in triglyceride and DHA fat levels.

"The experimental results showed that the content of beneficial fat components in cell membranes increased, thereby reducing the circulation of harmful fats in the body and thus lowering the risk of heart disease," said Dr. Coate.

Fishy aroma

Dr. Coates said that according to research, this pork or other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids do not have a fishy aroma. "We used multiple evaluation criteria to assess it, and there was no sensory difference between feed with added fish products and feed without added fish products.

Some pig farms in Australia have begun using this feed, and this feed is also useful for poultry farms.

However, it is unlikely to be put into use on cattle and sheep farms, because ruminants have a different digestive system, and this feed is not very suitable for them.
