How to choose materials for stump bonsai? Master these selection tips
Generally, plants with graceful forms, peculiar roots and trunks, brilliant flowers and fruits, strong sprouting ability, long lifespans, easy shaping, and strong resistance to adverse conditions are preferred. Plants suitable for stump bonsai are usually divided into three categories: conifers and cypresses, miscellaneous broadleaf trees, and flowering and fruiting trees.
1. Conifers and cypresses: Common excellent choices include five-needle pine, black pine, Buddhist pine, true pine, Jin pine, Huangshan pine, Chinese juniper, and creeping juniper.
2. Miscellaneous broadleaf trees: Materials vary from place to place. Common ones include Japanese bush cherry, Xiangfei bamboo, green-white bamboo, Buddha belly bamboo, serissa, boxwood, Chinese elm, trident maple, red maple, and banyan. These trees are characterized by dense branches and leaves, are easy to prune, and are easy to shape.
3. Flowering and fruiting trees: Pay attention to choosing plants that have both aged, peculiar forms and brilliant flowers and fruits. For example, plum blossom, camellia, ornamental peach, crabapple, crape myrtle, azalea, nandina, Chinese wolfberry, citron, Buddha's hand, pomegranate, and kumquat are all excellent stump bonsai tree species.
Among the above three types of plant bonsai materials, some are obtained through seedling cultivation, especially the latter type of tree stumps, which generally have several decades of tree age, with dry, decayed trunks and dense branches and leaves above, embodying a natural expression and possessing extremely high ornamental value.
