What are the key points for shaping a double-trunk bonsai?
The so-called double trunk refers to a tree with two trunks, as opposed to the straight trunk, curved trunk and other
single-trunk forms with only one trunk.
Secondly, the trunks can also be distinguished by thickness and length: the thicker one is the main trunk, and the thinner one is
the secondary trunk. If the secondary trunk is especially thin and short, the situation resembles that of a parent and child, and it is called a parent-child
double trunk.
(1) Selecting the planting material
The primary consideration for the double-trunk tree style is harmony. This includes the branching of the trunks,
length, thickness and other balanced factors, so special attention should be paid when selecting the planting material. At the same time,
the following three points should also be grasped: 1. The lower the branching point of the main trunk and the secondary trunk, the better; the best
tree form is one that begins branching right from the base of the root flare; 2. The best angle at the branching point is an acute angle;
some planting materials have a frog-crotch angle, so please avoid using them; 3. The thickness of the main trunk and the secondary trunk
must not differ too greatly.
(2) Key points for shaping
Position of the trunks and distribution of the main branches: when shaping this tree style, remember never to place the main trunk and
the secondary trunk side by side on a flat plane, and the secondary trunk should be pulled slightly backward; the main branches of the main trunk must also extend
in the opposite direction from the secondary trunk, in order to avoid the branches overlapping with each other. Although the double trunk is composed of two
trunks, it should still be regarded as a single whole, so when arranging the branches, it should be shaped according to the
basic forms such as the slanting trunk, that is, arranged in the order of the first branch (main trunk), the second branch (secondary trunk), and the third branch
(inner branch of the main trunk), so as to achieve a harmonious overall beauty. In addition, when a branch
grows toward the inside, it can be cultivated into a short branch to fill the space. At the same time, above the heart of the secondary trunk,
some space should also be left.
