Detailed Explanation of the Climbing and Binding Shaping Methods for Suzhou Tree-Stump Bonsai
Suzhou tree-stump bonsai relies mainly on pruning, with binding as a supplement; coarse binding and fine pruning, using both pruning and binding together. Among these, climbing-binding and pruning are the keys to shaping the tree stump. Now the focus is on introducing its climbing-binding of branches. Suzhou tree-stump bonsai traditionally uses palm fiber for climbing-binding. The palm fiber harmonizes with the color of the bark, and after climbing-binding the tree stump is already ornamental. The key is to grasp the focal points for applying the palm fiber and to select the appropriate thickness of palm fiber.
1. Full binding method
All materials are nursery stock, and everything from the trunk (main trunk) to the branches (branch pads) must be fully climbed and bound. Its branch pads are divided into three types: "platform, support, top." "Platform" refers to the branch pads on both sides of the main trunk, "support" refers to the branch pads behind the main trunk, and "top" refers to the branch pads at the top of the main trunk. First bind the main trunk, then bind the branch pads. The main trunk is bound from the lower part upward. Before binding, first determine the viewing side (front) of the tree stump, then determine the shaping style according to the natural posture of the tree stump. The climbing-binding styles include coiled-dragon style, lying-trunk style, or cliff-hanging style, etc. Taking the coiled-dragon style as an example, its characteristic is that the main trunk forms an 'S' shape, spiraling upward. When climbing-binding, the front of the tree stump faces forward. According to the thickness of the main trunk, select appropriate palm fiber and fix it at an appropriate position on the lowest part of the main trunk, preferably binding at a node or scar, where the palm fiber is less likely to slip. Then move the palm fiber left and right a few times, choose an appropriate position on the upper part of the main trunk, tie and fix it, and the first curve of the main trunk is completed. The second and third curves are the key to climbing-binding. The lower position of the second curve is generally about one-fifth upward from the middle of the first curve. After fixing the palm fiber, twist it left and right a few times, and choose an appropriate position on the upper part of the main trunk to tie. For the third curve, simply climb and bind upward along the 'S' shape.
2. Half binding method
For those dug up from the wild, the main trunk is generally already set in form and cannot be bent for climbing-binding. For such tree stumps, it is important to determine the shaping style according to the natural form of the trunk, and only climb and bind the main branches.
