A Case Study on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Joint Pain Caused by Rheumatism in Dogs
At present, dog keepers generally use pen-raising and tethered-raising methods, so dogs get relatively less exercise. If they encounter adverse factors such as sudden weather changes and damp environments, dogs are prone to rheumatism. A case study on the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid joint pain in a dog is recorded as follows:
(1) Onset and symptoms. A 6-month-old dog, weighing 7.8 kg, kept in a pen, suddenly became ill during consecutive rainy days and a damp environment. The sick dog was lame in the left forelimb and could not put it to the ground, had difficulty moving, often lay down and could not get up, and when forcibly driven, moved forward by hopping on three legs. Palpation of the sick dog's left forelimb showed pain, sensitivity, barking and struggling; the shoulder muscle group was sensitive; the shoulder joint and elbow joint were slightly swollen and felt warm. Body temperature measured over consecutive days was between 38-39.3 degrees C, and physiological indicators such as respiration and pulse were all normal. Appetite was also normal, and there were no abnormalities in feces or urine. Anti-inflammatory injections given during the first 2 days had poor effect.
(2) Diagnosis. Careful analysis of the above symptoms, combined with further examination, found no symptoms such as trauma, fracture or dislocation, and a preliminary diagnosis was rheumatoid joint pain in the dog.
(3) Treatment measures. First, give the dog analgesia and anti-inflammatory treatment: use 10 ml of 0.5% procaine hydrochloride solution, add 500,000 units of penicillin, and perform divided-point subcutaneous injections on the affected limb, once daily for 2 consecutive days. In addition, use 0.5 ml of Hamachan essence injection for intramuscular injection on the affected limb, once daily for 2 consecutive days. This drug has certain toxicity and must be used strictly according to the dosage in the instructions. Then give the sick dog treatment to dispel wind and remove dampness: use 20 ml of compound sodium salicylate injection, add 1 ml of dexamethasone, and perform intravenous injection in the forelimb, once daily for 3 consecutive days. At the same time, administer metamizole sodium orally, 2 tablets each time, once daily for 3 consecutive days. In addition, strengthen the nursing care of the sick dog. During treatment, take the sick dog to the exercise yard every morning and evening for activity, 30 minutes each time. Keep the kennel dry, frequently change the bedding, and hang a lamp to supplement light and heat. Feed easily digestible food rich in protein and add multivitamins.
5 days later, the sick dog's forelimb began to bear weight and walk, and it gradually recovered. Because rheumatism easily recurs, after the sick dog recovers, in addition to strengthening exercise, anti-rheumatic drugs should also be given regularly.
