Methods and Technical Key Points for Maintaining Pregnancy in Foxes

Livestock Farming 0 views
Under normal circumstances, after a female fox mates, the sperm and egg combine to form a zygote, and she then enters the gestation period. The average gestation period of foxes is 52 days. In the early stage of gestation, embryonic development is relatively slow, and in the later stage it develops more rapidly. After 30 days, an increase in abdominal circumference can be seen, and the vulva droops slightly, becoming more pronounced as gestation progresses. During gestation, due to fetal development, the female fox's metabolism is vigorous, her appetite increases sharply, and her body weight increases accordingly, while her coat also appears glossy. The female fox shows a gentle and timid temperament, is sensitive to surrounding foreign objects and unfamiliar sounds, moves slowly, and likes to lie down to rest and bask in the sun.

To ensure the normal gestation of the female fox, in addition to supplying nutrition according to standards, the fox farm must also be kept quiet at irregular intervals, and visits and motor vehicles must be prohibited from entering. Feeding personnel must carefully watch over the animals, and running foxes must be strictly prevented. From 5-10 days before the expected due date, the whelping box and cage equipment should be disinfected. If conditions permit, flame disinfection may be used, and 3% caustic soda solution can also be used for disinfection. At the same time, the insulation box must be kept warm. In weak areas at high latitudes, soft miscellaneous materials should be used to tamp down the four corners of the whelping box, artificially create a nest, and seal the gaps in the whelping box with paper to prevent cold wind from entering. In the low-latitude areas of Hebei and Shandong, because the weather has already warmed up when the birthing season arrives, insulation requirements are not so strict, but bedding straw is still necessary to prevent sudden cold waves.

The female fox has 4-6 pairs of nipples. In the later stage of gestation, the mammary gland area develops relatively quickly from front to back. Near the time of birth, due to the stimulation of highly developed mammary glands, most female foxes can pluck fur by themselves with their mouths, and the nipples can be seen. In female foxes with good milk production, milk secretion can be observed.
