The Huai pig is an ancient local breed native to the Huaibei Plain. As early as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods before the Common Era, agriculture on the Huaibei Plain was already quite developed, and people widely raised pigs for meat and for fertilizing farmland, gradually breeding and forming the Huai pig breed with increasingly uniform body type, appearance and production performance. During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties from the 3rd to 6th century CE and the Southern Song period in the 12th century, the economy of the Huaibei Plain suffered damage from wars, and with two large-scale migrations southward, the Huai pig was gradually introduced into the hilly and mountainous areas of Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou, where after long-term breeding it became the mountain pig. Later, with the development of the coastal areas, the Huai pig moved eastward and gradually formed the stove pig adapted to the coastal saline areas.

The Huai pig breeds in this province are divided into 3 types: the Huaibei pig, the mountain pig and the stove pig. Their main characteristics: the coat is black and relatively dense, the wrinkles on the forehead are shallow and few, the snout is relatively long and straight, the body type is relatively compact, and the limbs are sturdy. Sexual maturity is early, sows have a relatively large litter size, with an average of about 13 piglets per litter over 3-9 parities. Fattening pigs gain an average of about 475 grams per day, the feed conversion ratio is 4.57:1, the back and loin of the carcass are relatively thin, the skin is relatively thick, and the lean meat percentage is relatively high at 45%.

The Huai pig is mainly distributed in the Huaibei Plain of this province and the hilly and mountainous areas of Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Yangzhou and the coastal areas. In the late 1970s, because the New Huai pig was widely promoted in the Huaibei region, most local Huai pigs were replaced by New Huai pigs and their crossbred pigs. By 1987, the core production areas of the Huai pig were mainly concentrated in Ganyu, Yizheng, Gaoyou, Liyang, Gaochun, Dongtai, Dafeng and other counties, and its number of sows ranked second among local breed sows in the whole province.
