Feeding and Management Tips for Young Sheep During the Growing Period
Growing sheep refers to young sheep in the age range from weaning to first mating. For 3-4 months after weaning, growth and development are rapid, weight gain is intense, and the demand for feeding conditions is high. After 8 months of age, the intensity of sheep growth and development gradually declines.
Key feeding and management points for the early growing period: During this period, especially for newly weaned lambs, growth and development are rapid, the rumen volume is limited and its function is not yet fully developed, and the ability to utilize roughage is relatively poor. Therefore, during this period the sheep's diet should be based mainly on concentrate and can be supplemented with high-quality hay and fresh green succulent feed, and the crude fiber content of the diet should not exceed 15%-20%.
Key feeding and management points for the late growing period: During this period the sheep's rumen function is basically fully developed, and they can consume large amounts of pasture grass, silage and micro-stored straw. The proportion of roughage in the diet can be increased to 25%-30%, while concentrate or high-quality silage and hay must also be added.
The management of sheep during the growing period directly affects early breeding of sheep and must be taken seriously. When ewe lambs reach a body weight of 40 kg at 6 months of age, they can be mated at 8 months of age. Therefore, to have 80% of that year's ewe lambs participate in mating that same year, feeding during the growing period is crucial.
