How to grow a Golden Larch bonsai to make it more beautiful? Sharing practical tips
Golden Larch (Pseudolarix amabilis) has a tall, upright tree form, with linear green leaves that turn golden yellow in late autumn, connected in circular rings shaped like copper coins, hence its name. It is a deciduous tree of the genus Pseudolarix in the pine family (Pinaceae) and a precious tree species unique to China. It is generally propagated by sowing seeds.
Plants of varying thickness, height and shortness that are robust and healthy can be selected and planted together in one pot to create a forest-style bonsai. Attention should be paid to a clear distinction between primary and secondary elements and an organic arrangement of height and density, and when complemented with rocks and figurines, it can fully express a fresh and refined natural forest landscape. It can also be shaped according to its natural form into formal upright, double-trunk, needle-trunk, curved-trunk and other bonsai styles. The key maintenance points are as follows:
1. In soil that is too dry, barren or saline-alkaline, the shoot tips will stop growing and leaves will drop; deep, fertile, well-drained acidic or neutral soil is preferable.
2. It is not tolerant of heat; the optimum growing temperature is 15-25°C. When the summer temperature rises above 32°C, it should be moved to a shaded place, and during overwintering it must not go below 0°C.
3. It likes light; apart from 50-70% shading in summer, it can be grown in sunlight in all other seasons.
4. Attention must be paid to water control, keeping the potting soil on the drier side to prevent root rot. Generally, water when the soil is dry and withhold when moist, and frequently spray water on the leaves and branches to maintain the humidity of the potting soil and air, so as to prevent the leaf tips from drying out and withering.
5. During the growing season, apply diluted liquid fertilizer once a month, using decomposed organic fertilizer such as soybean cake residue diluted with water. Stop applying during the rainy season, high-temperature season or after the Start of Autumn.
6. When pruning, combine it with the designed shape and follow its growth vigor. Focus on shortening branches that grow too fast during the growing season, and temporarily retain slower and weaker branches until they grow thick and strong before dealing with them.
