Detailed Explanation of Artificial Aging and Ancient-Styling Techniques for Bonsai Trunks
Everyone knows that creating a highly artistic trunk bonsai often takes years or even decades to accomplish. How can one create a trunk bonsai with both excellent form and spirit in a relatively short time? Practice has proven that this goal can be achieved through artificial aging and ancient-styling techniques. The technical measures are as follows:
1. Material selection: Every winter and early spring, one can go to barren mountain ridges, cliff tops and wind gaps, precipitous cliffs, and other places to select plant materials suitable for bonsai. Due to poor growing conditions in these places, trees are mostly low and deformed. They easily form peculiar old trunks with low stems and curved branches in graceful postures, and are easy to transplant and survive.
2. Branch truncation to build the crown: This is an indispensable measure for shaping a trunk bonsai. The method is: when the first section of a branch or trunk has grown to a certain thickness, shorten and prune it to induce slanting or horizontal branches. The severity of pruning is determined according to the growth characteristics of the tree. After that, cultivate the second section, third section, and so on in sequence. Through continuous pruning, the crown is made to meet the needs of the trunk styling.
3. Wiring: Use wire and other materials to bind the branches and trunk of the bonsai so that they grow in the required curved posture. After the growth direction is fixed, remove the binding material. Wiring should be done in a suitable season; otherwise, branches and trunks are easily broken.
4. Prying the bark: In the season of vigorous plant growth, insert a pointed knife under the bark at a certain part of the trunk and gently pry along the phloem so that the bark and xylem slowly separate. In this way, tumor-like scars can form on the branches, giving the appearance of an ancient trunk from the wild.
5. Hollowing the trunk: On the main viewing surface, use a knife and chisel or wood drill to drill some small holes. After digging them flat, fill in some moist soil so that the small holes gradually become large holes. This can form a naturally bizarre shape with countless scars and holes.
6. Tearing the trunk: For trunks or branches on the trunk that need to be removed, do not cut them with scissors, but forcibly tear them off from the base by hand, or lightly bend and snap them off, so that natural split scars are produced on the retained trunk. This gives the charm of having been attacked by wind and frost. After the plant resumes normal growth, apply a little hydrochloric acid to the scars, and the trunk will appear even more aged and natural. In addition, to make the trunk aged and peculiar, one can also carve small strip-like grooves in the trunk with a small knife. After a period of growth, mottled dead branches and naturally exposed bark will appear on the trunk. Methods such as splitting the trunk, twisting the trunk, and peeling the trunk are used to produce scars on the trunk, making its form simple and antique, with the appearance of having gone through the vicissitudes of time.
