How to choose bonsai material? A detailed guide to material selection techniques and methods
The selection of tree bonsai material mainly refers to the choice of two aspects: the tree species and the appearance of the stump material. When choosing a tree species, besides considering the factors that make it suitable for bonsai creation, one should also fully take into account the aesthetic tastes and individual preferences of the maker or the viewer (consumer). Because everyone's level of education, appreciation habits, and aesthetic views differ, some love evergreen conifer and cypress species; some prefer deciduous trees rich in seasonal changes; and some are devoted to dazzling flowering and fruiting trees. Therefore, the selection of bonsai tree species must first be people-oriented, fully respecting the aesthetic requirements of different people and choosing according to each individual.
The selection of the stump's appearance is very important; in a sense, it determines the quality of the work. As the saying goes, a mountain need not be high; it is famous so long as there is an immortal on it. The same principle applies to bonsai material: whether the stump material is good does not necessarily depend on whether the tree species is rare and precious, but mainly on whether the stump material is ancient and venerable, bizarre and peculiar, and full of spiritual vitality. The specific selection criteria are:
(1) Choose an appearance with exposed, curved roots and tangled, knotted roots in the pot.
(2) Choose an appearance with a thick, twisted, bizarre, ancient, and simple trunk.
(3) Choose tree species with small, tough leaves that stay evergreen and emerald green.
(4) Choose tree species with bright, eye-catching flowers and fruits and fragrant, remarkable sights.
(5) Choose tree species that grow slowly, live long, sprout strongly, and tolerate pruning.
It is difficult to meet all of the above criteria in actual material selection; generally, if it can meet a few of them, it can be considered for selection.
