How to care for bonsai in summer? Five taboos of summer care and management

1. Avoid fertilizing. In the high heat of midsummer, leaves lose water relatively quickly. Fertilizing at this time will make the solute concentration of the trunk's cells lower than that of the external environment, causing water in the plant cells to flow backward into the soil, and the trunk will die from dehydration caused by fertilizer damage. 2. Avoid drought. Watering when you remember and not watering when you forget, sometimes leaving it unattended for several days in a row, and only quickly replenishing water once the leaves are found to be wilting, after which the leaves return to normal - this is a response of the trunk to adapt to the environment, but if this continues over the long term, excessively strong transpiration will ultimately make the trunk difficult to recover from serious illness and cause it to die of dehydration.

3. Avoid waterlogging.

Some people believe that frequent watering during high temperatures is beneficial to the growth of the trunk. In fact, when the pot soil is too wet, the root system remains in an anaerobic respiration state for a long time, and the trunk's root system loses its ability to absorb water, inorganic salts, and minerals, ultimately drowning to death.

4. Avoid sunscald.

When the ambient temperature exceeds 28°C, the bonsai should be shaded. Otherwise, the amount of water the trunk obtains from the soil is far less than the water it loses through transpiration. In mild cases, the leaf edges are scorched and withered; in severe cases, the trunk is scorched and dies from severe damage.

5. Avoid sudden shade.

Normally, to avoid high-temperature damage, when the ambient temperature exceeds the maximum temperature the trunk can tolerate, the bonsai should be moved to a lower-temperature area with weaker light, about 2°C lower, to benefit the trunk's growth. However, if it is suddenly moved indoors or to a lower-temperature area, within a few days the leaves will naturally fall off, and the tree trunk will wither and die.
