Key Cultivation Techniques for Floribunda Roses in Street Planting
I. Selection of planting site: It grows best in an environment with ample light, good air circulation, nutrient-rich soil and good drainage.
II. Soil replacement and preparation: Because road construction mostly involves compaction by large machinery, the soil structure is severely damaged and its aeration and drainage performance is poor. Therefore, before planting, the soil at the planting site must be replaced with loose soil rich in humus, to a depth of more than 50 cm. If the soil below is still compacted hard by machinery, that layer must be dug through before replacing the soil, so as to facilitate water infiltration. Before planting, dig the soil deeply to 30 cm and mix the soil and base fertilizer thoroughly.
III. Seedling selection and planting: Choose two-year-old potted seedlings that are free of pests and diseases and grow vigorously for transplanting; the plant and row spacing for planting is 30 cm.
IV. Maintenance: Water thoroughly once immediately after planting, and water at appropriate times during the growing season. Street soil conditions are poor, especially for floribunda roses planted in median strips, where the surrounding ground is all paved, solar radiation is strong, and in hot, dry seasons the frequency of watering must be increased, generally once a day, avoiding the midday high-temperature period. During the growing season, apply nitrogen-based fertilizer twice a year, both times after pruning. Fertilization method: spread the fertilizer evenly over the planting ground and then turn it into the soil. During the flowering period, apply additional fertilizer 1 to 2 times, mainly a compound fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, at 1 to 1.5 kg per 100 sq m, or spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves, to ensure continuous flowering.
V. Pruning: In the south, floribunda roses can bloom throughout the year, but there are 2 peak flowering periods, in early May and early October each year. To ensure that floribunda roses bloom during "May Day" and "National Day", prune once in mid-March and once in mid-August respectively. When pruning, first cut off all dead branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, weak branches and crossing branches from the base, leaving only 3 to 5 strong main stems per plant; the remaining main stems should extend in different directions to ensure even growth of the plant. The plant height should be 25 to 30 cm, containing 5 to 6 buds; the cut should be made about 1 cm above an axillary bud, with the cut at a 45-degree angle. Apply fertilizer once after pruning. After each flowering, promptly cut off the spent flowers; generally, cut off the spent flowers above the second compound leaf, keeping the axillary bud of the second compound leaf so that it sprouts again and blooms. As long as pruning is done properly, floribunda roses can bloom continuously all year round.
