Heatstroke (sunstroke and heat exhaustion)

This disease occurs in the height of summer, when the temperature is too high and ventilation is poor; the animal is exposed to direct sunlight, causing overheating of the brain (sunstroke), or the whole body is stimulated by heat (heat exhaustion). It usually develops rapidly and the mortality rate is very high.

Foxes and raccoon dogs have extremely underdeveloped sweat glands and dissipate body heat slowly, so their body temperature rises very easily, with listlessness, swaying gait, a fainting state, vomiting, difficulty breathing, open mouth with protruding tongue, continuous panting, cyanosis of the visible mucous membranes, and finally coma, convulsions and death.

After death, there is mostly cerebral congestion and pulmonary hemorrhage. When this disease occurs, the fur farm must immediately take cooling measures, such as watering the ground and strengthening ventilation facilities. Sick animals should be moved to a cool, well-ventilated shady place; cold compresses should be applied to the head; when cardiac function is insufficient, 1~2 milliliters of Qiang'erxin can be injected intramuscularly; for cages in sunny spots, measures such as shading, ventilation and sprinkling cool water on the ground or on the cages should be taken.
