What should be noted before koi are introduced into the pond?
Transporting koi is simple: just place them in a plastic bag filled with oxygen. Juvenile or medium-sized fish can be carried by the hobbyist, but large fish are usually shipped by the dealer.
New fish carry a high risk of pathogens or parasites, and if not handled properly they often infect healthy fish. Therefore, the transport water should preferably be dosed with salt and antibiotics. Anchor worms and fish lice are visible to the naked eye; if found, they must be removed immediately and the wounds disinfected.
The most important thing is adjusting the water temperature. Dealer pond water is generally warmer than the hobbyist's pond water. If the temperature difference exceeds 5°C, the fish easily catch cold, which in turn triggers other diseases. Therefore, newly arrived koi cannot be put straight into the pond; instead, the plastic bag holding the fish should be floated in the pond for about half an hour, and once the water temperature inside and outside the bag is equal, the bag is opened and the fish released into the pond.
Because the water quality of the dealer's pond and the hobbyist's pond differs, putting the fish directly into the pond causes "new water disease", namely the fish becoming emaciated and the pectoral or caudal fins rotting. Besides adjusting the water temperature, pond water should also be slowly introduced into the plastic bag so the fish gradually get used to the different water quality, and only then be released into the pond. At this point it is best to add an appropriate amount of salt for a dip, which can prevent the invasion of pathogens. After the fish pond and filtration system are completed, the cement alkali must first be removed, and only after test water is run can @#@233@#@.
For the daily management of the fish pond, the main concern is keeping the pond water clean. If there is fish excrement, leftover bait, leaves, etc., it must be removed as early as possible. Generally it is best to drain the bottom water once a day, and the filter chamber also needs to have the sludge at the bottom of the pond cleared about once a week, draining off the foul water and at the same time discharging substances in the water that are harmful to the fish. Maintaining good water quality is the most important point in pond management and also the key to keeping koi well.
