A plant of the genus Caragana in the Fabaceae family, scientific name Caragana Fabr., also known as ningtiao and Caragana korshinskii. Its English name is also peashrub. This genus has about 60 species. Native to Eurasia, China produces about 50 species, most of which are grassland psammophytic, xerophytic deciduous shrubs, and are forage and green manure plants. Widely distributed in the northwest, Inner Mongolia and other places. Mongolia and Siberia of the former Soviet Union also have distribution. Leaves often clustered or alternate, even-pinnate compound leaves or false palmate compound leaves, leaflets 4-20, entire, stipules small

Leaves often clustered or alternate, even-pinnate compound leaves or false palmate compound leaves, leaflets 4-20, entire, stipules small, deciduous or persistent and hardened into spines. Flowers solitary, pedicels jointed; corolla yellow, rarely red-purple or tinged with red, standard erect, recurved outward, wings and keel with long claws and short auricles; stamens 10, diadelphous; ovary nearly sessile, ovules numerous. Pods cylindrical or lanceolate, inflated or flattened, apex pointed; seeds oblique, elliptic or spherical. The main three species cultivated in China are: Caragana korshinskii Kom., Caragana intermedia Kuang et H.C.Fu and Caragana microphylla Lam. Caragana microphylla is scattered in dry grassland communities, plant height 40-70 cm, much branched, shrub-like; Caragana korshinskii is tall, plant height 150-300 cm, bark golden yellow, leaflets lanceolate or oblong, a desert psammophytic, xerophytic shrub, scattered on mobile sand or semi-fixed sand in desert and semi-desert zones; Caragana intermedia is shorter, plant height 70-250 cm, bark yellow-gray, yellow-green or yellow-white, distributed on sandy land in the steppe zone and desert steppe zone. In production, the cultivated Caragana, or ningtiao, is generally a mixed planting of Caragana korshinskii and Caragana intermedia. Cold-resistant, drought-resistant, not afraid of sand burial and wind erosion. It has a good effect on windbreak and sand fixation and preventing soil erosion. On sandy land, it can be sown without land preparation, and sowing in the rainy season while seizing soil moisture is best, in drills or hills, with a sowing rate of 15-22 kg per hectare. After lignification, its palatability is affected, and it can be processed into grass powder and mixed with other grass powder to feed livestock. In addition to forage use, it is used on desert steppe as a windbreak and sand-fixation shrub belt or as a biological fence.
