What to Do When Pigs Get Lice? Early Prevention and Control Is Key
Pig lice (haematopinus, hog lice) are wingless small insects that parasitize the body surface of pigs, mostly in the armpits, inner thighs, lower jaw, lower neck, and skin folds on the lower sides of the body, and also commonly behind the auricles. Pig lice suck the blood of pigs, causing itchy skin and restlessness. In severe cases, they can also cause skin damage, weight loss, and anemia in pigs, affecting their growth and development, and they can occur in all four seasons.
Healthy pigs can be directly infected through contact with lice-carrying diseased pigs, or indirectly through equipment, bedding straw, and so on. Pig lice reproduce quickly and are good at crawling. Once a pig is infected, it can spread rapidly to the whole herd.
A diagnosis can be confirmed based on symptoms and physical examination finding the insects and lice eggs attached to the hair. For the prevention and control of pig lice, attention should be paid to keeping the pig house and pig bodies clean and hygienic. Pigs should be inspected frequently, and pigs purchased from outside should be examined in detail for pig lice at the ear base, lower jaw, armpits, and inner thighs, and for lice eggs on the hair. Once discovered, treat promptly. The specific method to eradicate pig lice is: take 4 tablets of veterinary refined trichlorfon, 100 grams of talcum powder, and 2 camphor balls, mix and grind into a fine powder, wrap it well in clean gauze, and pat it evenly onto the pig's body, with special attention to patting it on the pig's abdomen, inner limbs, inner ear base, and other areas, once a day for 3 to 5 consecutive days, and pig lice can be eradicated. This medicine can also be used for external deworming of cattle, sheep, rabbits, chickens, and other livestock and poultry. For external deworming of livestock and poultry with longer hair, after applying the medicine, you must repeatedly touch the body of the livestock or poultry several times by hand (wearing leather gloves), so that the medicine fully contacts the skin of the livestock or poultry, in order to achieve the purpose of eradicating external parasites of livestock and poultry. You can also use 30 grams of Stemona root, add 500 milliliters of water, decoct for half an hour, and apply the juice to the affected area.
