How to Raise a Hermit Crab? Detailed Guide to Feeding Methods and Precautions

Livestock Farming 0 views
Hermit crabs are mainly found along the coastal edges of the Yellow Sea and the southern seas, generally living in sandy beaches and rock crevices by the sea. Hermit crabs use snail shells as their dwelling, usually crawling while carrying the shell, and when startled they immediately retract their bodies into the shell. As the crab gradually grows, the hermit crab will look for a new shell to change into. Dozens of hermit crab species are known, and the more common species along China's coast are the square-armed hermit crab and the ctenulate-chela hermit crab. The square-armed hermit crab is slightly larger than the ctenulate-chela hermit crab, and the largest diameter of the snail shell it inhabits can reach 1

The square-armed hermit crab is slightly larger than the ctenulate-chela hermit crab, and the largest diameter of the snail shell it inhabits can reach more than 15 cm. To raise hermit crabs, you can use a fish tank or a larger glass jar, plastic jar, or similar container, with the bottom covered with sand and stones built into a slope shape. Mix salt water at a concentration of 0.4-0.5%, and let it flood up to 1/3-1/4 of the slope. If conditions permit, you can also install a small filter. Hermit crabs can be fed minced fish meat, clam meat, or small shrimp meat, and the food should be placed on the sandy surface above the water. Feeding once a day is enough, and any uneaten food should be cleaned up promptly to avoid polluting the water quality. In summer, change 1/3 of the water every week; in winter, the water-changing interval can be a little longer.
