What kind of tree is the golden-leaf dawn redwood?
The golden-leaf dawn redwood (M. glyptostroboides 'GoldRush') is a cultivar of the dawn redwood developed in recent years. It is a fast-growing, vigorous deciduous tree with reddish-brown bark; its leaves are flat and linear, arranged in 2 opposite rows on short shoots; the new leaves remain golden yellow through all three seasons of spring, summer and autumn.
The golden-leaf dawn redwood is mostly introduced from Japan, has relatively strict requirements for microclimate, demands fairly high air humidity, and prefers a humid climate. At present, it has been introduced in Beijing, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and other places; trials show that it performs poorly in some parts of Beijing, while the golden-leaf dawn redwoods introduced in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang have strong adaptability, grow fast, have straight trunks, beautiful tree shapes and stable leaf color, and three-year-old seedlings can reach more than 3 m in height. It is mostly propagated by cuttings, which can be done in all four seasons and gives a high survival rate.
The golden-leaf dawn redwood is relatively tolerant of water and moisture, making it an excellent landscaping tree for plain lake areas, while as a colored-leaf tree species it has broad development prospects in East China.
