How to propagate broadleaf privet? Detailed propagation techniques
I. Seed propagation
1. Seed selection: In North China, late November to mid-December is the suitable period for seed collection. Choose trees with strong vigor, good form and strong resistance as mother trees. Carry out collection on a sunny afternoon, selecting seeds with high maturity, plump grains and no pests or diseases. After collection, dry them in a cool, ventilated place in the shade; avoid direct sunlight.
2. Soil mixing and land preparation: Select 2 parts fertile sandy loam with a pH of 6.7 to 7.0, 1 part high-quality peat soil, and 1 part field soil, then add 1.5 kg of diammonium phosphate and 2 to 3 kg of superphosphate per cubic meter of soil. A sowing substrate can also be used, spread evenly at a thickness of 1 to 3 cm. Choose a slightly acidic soil plot with sand on top and clay below, and prepare the land to meet the technical requirement of loose on top and firm below, laying a good foundation for root growth during the seedling stage and for cultivating strong seedlings.
3. Sowing and post-emergence management: Sow directly harvested, shade-dried seeds in rows at 15 to 20 kg per mu; in greenhouses this can be done in December. Generally, mid-March is suitable when the soil temperature rises to 14°C to 16°C. Open-field sowing gives a higher emergence rate. Maintaining moisture from sowing to emergence is very important, keeping the soil moist but not dry. For three months after emergence, apply organic fertilizer in furrows and compound fertilizer by broadcasting to balance the proportions of nutrients, achieving the goal of strong seedlings and straight branches.
