The Yunnan yew is mainly distributed in western Yunnan and 16 counties across prefectures, with a total area of about 90,000 sq km. Its characteristics are wide distribution, scattered growth, no pure forests, and it is mostly scattered trees in forests. The southern yew is mainly distributed in eastern Yunnan, southwestern Yunnan, and eastern Yunnan pure forests, and is mostly scattered trees in forests. It is also distributed in western Jiangxi (Yifeng, Tonggu area). The Tibetan yew is mainly distributed in northwestern Yunnan, and southern and southeastern Tibet.

The Maire yew is a hybrid variety introduced to China at the end of the 20th century. Its female parent is the Japanese yew (T. CUSPIDATA) and its male parent is the European yew (. T. BACCDFA). It has a history of no more than 80 years in the United States and Canada. The Maire yew is mostly shrub-type. Because it can only grow into a shrub and cannot grow into a tree, it is a good variety for landscaping.
