Key Breeding Techniques for Early Growth of the Second-Crop Velvet in Deer

Livestock Farming 0 views
There are 2 methods for harvesting velvet antler: sawing the antler and cutting the antler. Among them, sawing the antler generally starts from 3-year-old deer, and can be harvested 2 times per year. The 1st time is 45-50 days after Qingming, called "first-crop velvet", and the 2nd harvest is 50-60 days later, called "second-crop velvet". To promote early growth of the second-crop velvet, the following measures can be taken: 1. Select superior deer breeds - generally, the regeneration velvet yield of Tianshan red deer and Tarim red deer is significantly higher than that of Northeast red deer, so to obtain more regeneration velvet, it is best to choose to raise these two pure red deer breeds. 2. To promote early growth of the second-crop velvet, the following measures can be taken:

1. Select superior deer breeds - generally, the regeneration velvet yield of Tianshan red deer and Tarim red deer is significantly higher than that of Northeast red deer, so to obtain more regeneration velvet, it is best to choose to raise these two pure red deer breeds.

2. Utilize hybrid vigor; for sika deer and red deer, especially interspecific hybridization with Tarim red deer or Tianshan red deer, or P1 hybrid deer from three-way crosses among other velvet deer breeds and among red deer, the regeneration velvet yield is significantly increased, better than the effect of using "CA Velvet Increase Agent" or "Velvet Increase Ling", and it is effective for life.

3. Harvest velvet at the right time. For sika deer, the two-branch type should be harvested. For initial-antler regeneration velvet, the three-branch type should not be harvested; for red deer, in addition to harvesting the lotus-type initial-antler regeneration velvet, those with good growth can be harvested as three-branch type or even up to 4.5 kg four-branch type tough-antler regeneration fresh velvet.

4. With proficient antler-sawing technique, after securing the deer, each antler to be sawed should have a flat saw cut (no slanting, no pressing, no drifting), and the "stubble" height should be appropriate and meet international standards.

5. Pay attention to hemostasis. In the process of velvet antler production, accidents in which male deer die due to failure of hemostasis during antler sawing occur from time to time. Do a good job of hemostasis during antler sawing, and at the same time try to avoid rainy days, and choose a hemostatic agent that is not too sticky.

6. Nutritional regulation and reasonable velvet increase. The use of feed additives can effectively increase velvet antler yield.

In addition, the use of controlled temperature and controlled light feeding techniques can enable young deer to grow tough-antler velvet early, and aged male deer to shed the velvet base early, grow velvet early, and even grow more regeneration velvet; the use of linear cultivation techniques can enable red deer fawns to grow velvet from mid-October to December of the year they are weaned, and sika deer weaned fawns can grow velvet in November-December of the same year.
