Scientific name: Taxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc.

Family: Taxaceae Genus: Taxus

Distribution: Native to forests of the Changbai Mountain area in eastern Jilin and Liaoning.

Biological characteristics: A tree, up to 20 m tall, with a diameter at breast height of up to 1 m; crown broadly ovate or obovate; male plants have a narrower crown while female plants are more spreading; bark reddish-brown, splitting off in flakes. A shade-tolerant tree, slow-growing, with a shallow root system and well-developed lateral roots; it prefers moist soil rich in organic matter, is cold-hardy, and grows well in areas with high air humidity.

Application value: With its upright form, it can be planted as a specimen or in groups, and can also be used as a hedge; it is suitable for pruning into various sculpted shapes. Yew wood is dense and hard, decay-resistant, beautiful and fragrant, and not prone to warping or cracking, so it can be used for fine carving, interior architectural finishing, fine furniture, and pencil shafts. Taxine can be extracted from the wood, branches, and leaves, which is effective in treating diabetes. The aril is sweet and edible; it is also said that the leaves are toxic, and the seeds can be pressed for oil.

Planting method: Propagated by seed; it is best to sow immediately after collection or to stratify and store the seeds for sowing the following spring; this tree is difficult to transplant in dry and warm areas, but in cool areas with higher air humidity it is relatively easy to transplant and survive.
