I. Yulocust No. 1. Yulocust No. 1 (unified number 8048) passed the review of the Henan Provincial Forest Tree Improved Variety Examination and Approval Committee in 2000. This variety has light gray bark, shallow fissures, and small, uniform fissure pieces. The main trunk is straight to the top, and the lateral branches are long and sparse. The crown is obovate, and the leaflets are relatively wide and oblong. It grows rapidly and yields high and stable production. When planted in the loess hilly area of western Henan, the 5-year-old trees reached a height of 9.14 m and a diameter at breast height of 7.41 cm, significantly exceeding the local common black locust. In Baotou City, Inner Mongolia, under conditions of 350 mm annual rainfall, 0.3% soil salinity in sandy soil, and an extreme minimum temperature of -37°C, Yulocust No. 1 had no frost damage at all. The 7-year-old trees reached a height of 11.8 m and a diameter at breast height of 17.2 cm, exceeding the local common black locust in Inner Mongolia by 13.4% and 138.9%, respectively, and the timber volume exceeded it several times over. Therefore, Yulocust No. 1 is also suitable for afforestation in arid and cold regions, and is the best black locust variety for windbreak and sand fixation in the northwest region.
