Li Yue from Lailong Town, Suyu District, Suqian City called to report that his family raises 500 laying pigeons, and recently 50% of the @#@247@#@ showed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, with droppings being yellow, white, or green; the sick pigeons cannot stand and have mucus in their mouths. The local veterinarian diagnosed it as pigeon cholera. He asks how to prevent and treat pigeon cholera.
Pigeon cholera is an acute septicemic infectious disease caused by Pasteurella multocida, also known as pigeon pasteurellosis or pigeon hemorrhagic septicemia. The most acute cases of pigeon cholera die suddenly with almost no visible clinical symptoms. Acute cases show listlessness, difficulty breathing, elevated body temperature, complete loss of appetite, ruffled and dull feathers, and foamy mucus in the nasal cavity and oral cavity; diarrhea is common, with droppings being copper-green or yellow-brown, and the feathers around the cloaca are stuck together by droppings; sick pigeons rapidly lose weight, cannot stand, and soon die. Chronic cases and a few acutely infected survivors mainly show lameness, swollen joints, and chronic respiratory inflammation. The main pathological changes are mucus accumulation in the nasal cavity, fibrinous caseous exudate in the air sacs and thoracic cavity; cardiac hemorrhage, pinpoint hemorrhages and grayish-white necrotic foci in the liver; and intestinal hemorrhage.
To treat pigeon cholera, first isolate the sick pigeons and disinfect the pigeon house and surrounding environment. Then choose 1-2 of the following drugs to treat the sick pigeons, with a treatment course of 3-7 days. (1) Penicillin sodium salt, inject 50,000-80,000 units intramuscularly per sick pigeon, 3-4 times daily; (2) Streptomycin, inject 20,000-50,000 units intramuscularly per sick pigeon, 2-3 times daily; (3) 20% sulfadiazine sodium injection, inject 1-2 milliliters intramuscularly per sick pigeon, twice daily; (4) Kanamycin injection, inject 20,000-30,000 units intramuscularly per sick pigeon, twice daily; (5) Quick-acting poultry rescue tablets, administer 0.05-0.08 grams orally per sick pigeon, twice daily.
