A Detailed Guide to Selecting and Choosing Breeding Angelfish
Let's talk about breeding angelfish. First, when selecting breeding fish, choose healthy young fish with strongly contrasting, vivid colors and good body shape, and raise them from a young age. As for the issue of "disabilities," you need to look at it from two sides. Some disabilities must be firmly avoided when selecting fish, such as: a crooked body, deformed head or mouth, etc.; but ordinary external injuries, damaged scales or fins, and so on are minor problems that will not affect breeding quality. When raising breeding fish, pay attention to four issues:
First, increase the amount of water changed, and it is better to change less at a time but more often; you can do it once every three days, 30% each time; the purpose is to stimulate the fish's metabolic function.
Second, pay attention to disease and pest prevention. Once angelfish get sick, they are hard to treat, mainly because they do not respond well to medication, so prevention should be the priority. The biggest diseases of angelfish are internal parasites and enteritis. After new fish have stabilized, first feed medicated food to expel parasites, the first time at 7-10 days after stabilization, then once every two months, feeding for three consecutive days each time, once a day is enough. To prevent enteritis, also use medicated food, once a month, for two days each time. Small doses of medication will not affect breeding. (For medicated food I use "Zhenbao" No. 2 and No. 3 produced in Tianjin.)
Third, insist on a diverse diet, avoid monotony, and prevent malnutrition in breeding fish.
Fourth, avoid keeping them at high temperatures; generally control it at 25-26°C, as high temperatures are bad for breeding and for the lifespan of breeding fish.
Once breeding fish are raised well, pairing is very easy, so just let them pair naturally; there is no need to be too demanding. Natural pairing generally occurs at 6 or 7 months of age, but pairing does not mean they are ready to breed; you still have to wait another 1 or 2 months. If you want to breed in a targeted direction, you can also keep two males and one female together to force pairing, with the timing at 6 or 7 months of age; when natural pairing behavior is observed, the success rate is about 90%.
