Conch Aquaculture Technology

The conch is a seafood product with a very wide distribution range; conches can be seen in marine areas of virtually any environment. The conch has very strong reproductive capacity and has basically become an overpopulated pest abroad. However, in China, due to the "foodie instinct" of Chinese people, conches have now reached the point of requiring artificial aquaculture. So how should conches be farmed? Below, the editor brings you the aquaculture technology for conches. Let's take a look!

1. Aquaculture Environment

When farming conches, pay attention to controlling the aquaculture environment well. They must not be co-farmed with other shellfish, and should be kept away from shellfish of the same species to prevent competition for nutrients and fighting. Determine the farming quantity according to funds, aquaculture technology, etc., and then reasonably control the farming area. The farm must be enclosed with iron netting to ensure it is sufficiently sturdy, preventing conches from escaping during farming or other shellfish from entering the farming area. Insert an appropriate number of small bamboo poles into the enclosure net so that during summer high temperatures and low oxygen, conches can climb up the bamboo poles to breathe.

2. Seedling Selection

Seedling selection for conches is very simple; generally they are caught in the ocean, choosing live conches with lighter color, intact and thin shells, and rounded bodies. At present, the quantity of artificial seedling breeding in China is relatively small, with only a small amount sold at a few wharves in coastal provinces. After selecting the seedlings, wash them clean, then put them into baskets for uniform transport. When stocking, pay attention to the stocking density; never stock too densely, and spread them evenly in the pre-prepared aquaculture sea area. Then do a good job in management to ensure the growth of the conches and improve the survival rate.

3. Feeding Management

After stocking, pay attention to the seawater temperature and keep the water temperature at around 15-30 degrees. The conch is an omnivorous shellfish; in artificial aquaculture, the feed is mainly small fish, shrimp, and shellfish. We should also pay attention to the content of diatoms in the seawater, because conches also feed on diatoms; therefore, when diatoms are scarce, increase the feeding amount, and vice versa, appropriately reduce it. Check the feeding situation of the conches about every 3 days to prevent overfeeding from causing water quality deterioration and blackening of the bottom mud, which can trigger diseases and pests in the conches. If pole-climbing behavior occurs, increase oxygen in time, adjust water quality, and promote the growth of the conches.

4. Precautions

The main farming method for conches is primarily enclosure culture, which is a high-density aquaculture project. Around July-August each year, appropriate harvesting can be carried out, adopting the principle of keeping the strong and replenishing the weak. For conches that have not reached market standards, continue raising them; the following year they can be used as seedlings or sold on the market. Conches have strong adaptability, but their growth rate accelerates in suitable environments; therefore, during aquaculture, pay attention to water quality changes. Adjust the ratio of bacteria to algae in the water, regularly clean the enclosure net, control the amount of bait, control the dissolved oxygen level, and treat diseases promptly when they occur to prevent cross-infection.

The above is a brief introduction to conch aquaculture technology. Conches are not suitable for farming in freshwater; the survival rate of conches in freshwater is very low, which will seriously affect farming benefits. That's all for today's introduction.
