Control Methods for Anthracnose Disease in Japanese Euonymus
[Symptoms] Japanese euonymus anthracnose is distributed throughout the country. In the early stage of the disease, water-soaked yellowish-brown small spots appear on the leaves, with an indistinct boundary between diseased and healthy tissue, and the lesions later expand. In the late stage, the affected areas turn yellow, and small black dots (conidial acervuli) appear on the lesions, arranged in distinct or indistinct concentric rings. It often causes leaf blight and premature leaf fall.
[Pathogen and disease pattern] Caused by infection of the Deuteromycetes fungi Colletotrichum griseam Heaidet Waif and Gloeosporium frigidium Sate. The sexual stage is Glomerella of the Ascomycetes, and pathogens of this genus also attack many flowers and flowering shrubs. It overwinters as conidial acervuli in diseased plant residues and soil, and can also overwinter as conidia and mycelium on diseased plant tissues. In late spring of the following year, conidia are spread by insects and wind and rain. Conidia invade through stomata or wounds, and euonymus can be repeatedly infected multiple times during the growing season. The disease is severe every year in summer and autumn. Generally, conditions such as more wounds on plants, overly dense planting, poor ventilation, excessive nitrogen fertilizer application, and weak plant growth can all aggravate the disease.
[Integrated control]
(1) Eliminate sources of inoculum. Promptly remove dead branches, fallen leaves and diseased plant residues, and burn them to reduce re-infection and sources of inoculum.
(2) Strengthen management. Do not plant too densely when raising seedlings; try to avoid causing wounds during maintenance; promptly control scale insects; do not use overhead watering when irrigating; and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
(3) Chemical control. In the early stage of the disease, spray 80% Carbendazim-Thiram wettable powder at 500-800 times dilution, or 25% Ouruiyou at 2000 times dilution for control.
