Changchun Erqiao Yulan is a cultivated variety of Erqiao Yulan (Magnolia soulangeana 'Changchun').
Changchun Erqiao Yulan was selected and bred from bud-sport branches of Erqiao Yulan. Through nearly 20 years of propagation trials and germplasm conservation work, a group of superior clonal lines was selected with beautiful flower form, vivid flower color, multiple flowering cycles (3 in the south, 2 in the north), low plant height and vigorous branching. With strong resistance and a wide adaptive range, a set of techniques was summarized for autumn small-bud side grafting and summer single-bud greenwood grafting that saves scions, is easy to operate, and can achieve a survival rate of over 90%, along with management techniques for field planting and container growing. This work expanded the magnolia, a famous flowering tree, from field planting to container growing and from single-season flowering to multi-season flowering; in particular, its successful northward introduction was a major breakthrough. Since 1986, a total of 60,000 large Changchun Erqiao Yulan seedlings have been propagated, and 40,000 seedlings have been promoted to 23 provinces and cities nationwide, with a net increase in output value of 210,000 yuan. This technique has won high praise from the landscaping community and is widely commended by flower enthusiasts.
