Spider Plant Care Methods and Daily Maintenance Tips
Spider plant is a perennial evergreen herbaceous flowering plant with a rosette root system. It has diverse forms and is also highly shade-tolerant and easy to manage. It is often used as a hanging potted plant for indoor decoration or garden landscaping. Its management should master the following points:
1. Temperature regulation. Spider plant prefers a warm and humid climate and is not cold-tolerant. It grows fastest at 20-24°C, stops growing above 30°C, and its leaves tend to turn yellow and dry at the tips. Therefore, in summer, take measures to prevent heat and lower the temperature, and pay attention to ventilation. In winter, it should be cultivated in a greenhouse or indoor shelter, with an overwintering temperature of 10°C being suitable, and not lower than 5°C.
2. Light regulation. When cultivated outdoors in summer, pay attention to shading so that the light is not too strong, otherwise sunscald is very likely to occur. When overwintering in a greenhouse or indoor shelter in winter, pay attention to light exposure to prevent the leaf color from becoming pale due to insufficient light.
3. Water and fertilizer regulation. During the peak growing seasons of spring and autumn, watering should be sufficient, the potting soil should be kept moist regularly, and the branches and leaves should often be sprayed with clean water close to room temperature to prevent dry tips, but waterlogging should be avoided. During the peak growing season, apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every half month. In winter, water less and stop topdressing.
4. Pruning and repotting. As the plant grows larger, in order to maintain a good plant shape, old leaves at the base should be pruned frequently. In addition, spider plant has strong sprouting ability and grows quickly, and easily fills the pot, so it should be repotted once every two years.
5. Pest control. When spider plant clumps are dense and ventilation is poor, it is susceptible to scale insect damage, so prevention should be the main approach. If scale insects occur, use a 50% malathion emulsion at 1000-1500 times dilution and spray once every 7 days, for 2-3 consecutive sprays.
