Engineering Applications and Management Methods for Hokkaido Boxwood
Hokkaido boxwood is an excellent landscaping material, but because it was introduced and promoted relatively late, many design units are still not familiar enough with its growth habits and characteristics, and it is used sparingly or configured inaccurately in design applications. As a result, nursery growers feel lost about how to cultivate and prune it: they plant a whole field of seedlings but do not know how to manage them, and after several years pass, they are left sighing in dismay! Based on several years of research and practice at this nursery, the following cultivation trial methods are considered effective.
1. Single-trunk small tree. When the seedling grows to 1.8-2 m, pinch out the growing tip at the top, keep the upper 30 cm for branching, and remove all branches below so that it concentrates on developing the upper part into a crown.
2. Flowering crown tree. The method is basically the same as above, except that the height is set at 1-1.2 m.
3. Column form. The height is generally controlled at 2-2.5 m, it is basically allowed to grow freely, and it is pruned appropriately around the column form.
4. Combined shaping. To speed up the time to leave the nursery, 3-4 plants can be planted together and pruned into either a pagoda form or a column form.
5. High grafting on large trees. Select tree species of the same family with a diameter of 8 cm or more for half-crown high-top grafting, and cultivate them as specimen trees for solitary planting or group planting.
6. Natural growth. This is the simplest method. It grows to more than 1 m.
According to project needs, it can be used as a tall hedge or a plant landscape wall.
