Symptoms and Control Methods of Brown Spot Disease in Japanese Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus)
Symptoms: Yellow or brown small spots appear on new leaves, gradually expanding into nearly circular irregular patches, with a diameter of up to 3-10 mm. Later the diseased spots turn grayish-brown or grayish-white, with a darker edge, and the spots bear concentric rings and many small black mold dots.
Pathogen and disease pattern: Fungus. It is the imperfect fungus Cercospora destructiva Rav. The disease begins to occur in mid to late May, with the peak period in August, and basically stops after November. Extensive management, abundant rain, poor ventilation and light penetration, cold weather in spring, hot weather in summer, and insufficient fertilizer and water make the disease prone to occur.
Control methods: (1) Remove diseased leaves promptly when found. (2) During the disease season, spray 1% equal-amount Bordeaux mixture, 50% carbendazim 500-fold solution, or 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder 1500-fold solution, with a spraying interval of 10-15 days.
