Bougainvillea Flower Forcing Methods and Measures Explained
Bougainvillea, with abundant flowers and lush leaves, is easy to grow in pots and not difficult to propagate, with excellent cold resistance. In the northwestern Jiangxi region, it can overwinter just placed under the south-facing eaves. The drawback is: vigorous vegetative growth; if sunlight is insufficient and care and management are improper, it will be difficult to bloom. Adopting one of the following technical measures can make it bloom as early as June to July, with a flowering period lasting about 2 to 3 months.
1. Water withholding: Purple-red bougainvillea that has overwintered in dormancy sprouts and grows new branches in March, and by May most new branches have grown to about 10 cm; choose hot sunny days to withhold water, for 3 to 5 consecutive days without watering or fertilizing. After an interval of 1 to 2 days, withhold water once more, for a total of one week of water withholding. After water withholding, it quickly shifts from vegetative growth to reproductive growth. It can bloom in June. This method can be used cyclically and has the most remarkable effect.
2. Girdling: In May the weather has more rain, and when water withholding is ineffective, use girdling. On the middle-lower part of the main trunk, use a sharp knife to make upper and lower half-ring cuts, with a length of 1 to 1.5 cm, and peel off the bark at the girdled area, down to the xylem. After girdling, part of its nutrient transport cycle is cut off, prompting it to shift from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, and it quickly forms buds and blooms.
3. Binding: Also when water withholding fails, wrap a small iron wire once around the middle-lower part of the main trunk, placing a piece of rubber at about 1/3 of it to avoid fully bruising the bark, then twist the two ends of the iron wire into a knot, clamp the two ends of the iron wire with pliers, and twist tight, tightening the iron wire until the bark and the iron wire are balanced. This forces the transport of nutrients absorbed by the root system to be interrupted, and the plant shifts to reproductive growth, forcing the plant to shift to blooming.
4. Pinching: In May to June, when the plant's new branches grow to about 10 cm, pinch them in time to prevent the branches from growing excessively into vines; this has a certain effect on producing more new branches and promoting more new flower branches and blooming.
